Turning the laptop on or keeping it on right after the spill was a stupid thing to do. I hope the liquid didn';t reach the motherboard. You could have made it worse and fried the circuits.
The laptop should be turned off immediately and all sources of power removed. The Compaq A Series Keyboard should be taken out and left standing on one side to make sure that liquid spills out. Search youtube for video tutorials on how to remove the keyboard. It might even require washing in liquid detergent and tapping on the keys if the liquid that was spilled wasn';t plain water. Leave everything to dry for a few days. It would also be faster if you put everything inside a pillow case or wrap with a paper towel and enclose them in a box full of uncooked rice so that the moisture will be absorbed. Keep it there for 2-3 days before putting everything back together and restoring the power.
By the way, accidents like that aren';t covered by warranty as they fall under user';s carelessness or mishandling. If something needs to be replaced, you have to pay for it.
