Abstract:
The classical Ergodic Theorem addresses the norm and pointwise convergence of averages in a dynamical system. It was known for a long time that there were close connections and parallels between this convergence theorem and analogous convergence theorems in harmonic analysis and the theory of martingales. In the last 20 years, these insights have been clarified and deepened in a way that has greatly enhanced our understanding of convergence theorems in all of these contexts. This talk will describe these connections and the fundamental techniques that are used to understand convergence and oscillations theorems in ergodic theory and harmonic
