清华举办第二届应用数学前沿问题国际研讨会暨
林家翘教授90华诞庆祝会
　　【新闻中心讯 记者 顾淑霞 摄影 郭海军】6月8日上午，第二届应用数学前沿问题国际研讨会暨林家翘教授90华诞庆祝会在我校主楼接待厅开幕。来自美国、意大利、日本、港台地区及大陆等地的著名科学家和友好人士参加研讨会并共庆林家翘先生90岁生日。国务委员陈至立出席研讨会并致辞。

　　在为期两天的研讨会上，15位国际著名学者将就神经科学、天体物理学和非线性波动学及蛋白质结构研究等领域的最新成果及未来发展趋势做学术报告。

林家翘先生致辞　　
　　作为国际著名的科学家，林家翘先生一直致力于通过数学的应用来推动自然科学的发展，他不仅在流体力学、天体物理等方向上取得了举世公认的成就，而且为应用数学概念的传播不遗余力。及至耄耋之年，林家翘先生仍勤耕不辍，继续在生物学（蛋白质结构）这一崭新领域开拓探索。2002年，林家翘先生在清华创建“周培源应用数学研究中心”，积极倡导以科学为主体的应用数学在中国的发展。中心成立3年多来，在林先生的努力下，积极开展数学与应用科学之间的交叉性、科学性和前瞻性的研究，聘请多名国际著名学者进行学术交流，工作取得了可喜的进展。林先生还身体力行致力于研究工作，用榜样的力量来启发和激励大家。此次研讨会就是为弘扬林家翘先生学无止境、锐意创新的科学精神，为提高学术水平、促进国际合作与交流而召开的。

　　国务委员陈至立在致辞中对林家翘先生卓越的科学成就及为中国教育和科学事业的发展所做出的重要贡献给予了充分肯定。她说，林先生始终对祖国和人民怀有深厚的感情，积极推动中国与世界高等教育和科学技术方面的交流，今天庆祝林先生九十寿辰，要学习他热爱祖国、热爱人民、热爱科学的崇高情怀，学习他潜心治学、诲人不倦、为人师表的高尚品德，学习他追求真理、不断创新、永攀高峰的科学精神。　　
　　陈至立强调，要认真贯彻胡锦涛总书记在两院院士大会上的讲话精神，把培养造就创新型科技人才作为建设创新型国家的战略举措，最大限度地激发科技人员的创新激情和活力，形成有利于优秀人才脱颖而出的良好环境，加紧建设一支宏大的创新型科技人才队伍。林先生作为领军人物，在清华执教，培养青年学生，最重要的价值是给予年青人一种科学的思想和科学方法。

Dear friends:

        The year of 2006 will see the 90 th birthday of Prof. Chia-Chiao Lin (C.C.Lin). As is well known, Prof. Lin devoted most of his life to the development of applied mathematics and achieved great success in applying mathematics to advance several areas of natural sciences, including fluid mechanics and astrophysics. Now, he is making an endeavor to do the same for biology, specifically, in the study of protein structure and the mechanism of protein folding.
      To celebrate the 90 th Birthday of Prof. C.C. Lin and to honor his contributions to the advancement of applied mathematics, Tsinghua University will host an international symposium on June 8-9 2006 in Beijing :
The Second International Symposium on the Frontier of Applied Mathematics
- in honor of Prof. C.C. Lin at his 90 th Birthday
At that time, more than ten world famous scientists from three main fields Prof. Lin once engaged in will give their lectures. The following is the announcement about the symposium. We expect that it would be an exciting and successful event.
